The Classic Stamp Types and How to Use Them

On this occasion, we will review in detail the various types of stamps, their materials, and how to use them.

What Is a Stamp?

A stamp is a craft product that serves as a medium for transferring images, writing, or both, from the tub or ink pad to the surface of the paper.

The way of making stamps was initially limited to engraving or gouging the surface of objects. However, along with the development of the printing business, the ways of making stamps are becoming more diverse.

The Classic Stamp Types

Times are increasingly advanced, and technology has developed in such a way and has an impact on all sectors of life.

Technological advances also have an impact on the stamp-making process; now, there are many types and uses.

The following are several types of stamps, from the simplest to the high-tech.

1. Wax Stamps

According to The History Of Stamping, Wax Stamps, which are often found for decorative purposes, have been used since the Middle Ages (500-1000 AD).

King Edward is known as the first British monarch to use it as an official royal seal.

Even though they are no longer used for official and formal purposes, wax seals still exist today.

How to Use Wax Stamp

How to use wax stamps is to melt a special wax sealing wax.

Either using a furnace or by burning the wick contained in the wax candle.

After the wax has melted, put a few drops on the surface you want to seal. Then press it with a metal or brass plate that has been affixed with our design/logo stamp.

The result is, of course, very beautiful and elegant. Add an exclusive impression to letters or gifts for special people.

Because of the luxurious and artistic impression, sealing wax is often used on premium invitation envelopes in the upper class.

2. Embossed Stamps

An embossed stamp is a stamp that is used without the use of ink. Rather, it is in the form of an embossed relief trail on paper or plastic.

Commonly used for important documents such as diplomas, certificates, letters of agreement, charters, and others.

It is ideal for paper with a grammage of 180g and is not recommended for ordinary HVS paper. Because even though it can be used, the results are not optimal.

Embossed Stamp Functions:

Embossed stamps are intended for security or as a kind of seal for important documents from the possibility of forgery by irresponsible parties.

3. Wooden Rubber Stamps

Wooden rubber stamps are a general term for stamps that use wood as the handle/holder.

In the past, around the 90’s to the mid-2000s, wooden rubber stamps used tire rubber as the main raw material. The rubber tires used are the wheel covers for large trucks or buses.

Final Thoughts

And those are the classic stamp types you need to know. As you can see, we had developed much further from the old days when people still used wax seals as a sign of authority. Aside from the classic rubber types above, now people also use the stamps that are more practical, like pre-ink stamps or self-inking stamps.
